Hummingbird Hypnotherapy Blog

I'm Silvia Mather, from Hummingbird Hypnotherapy.
I live in the North East of England and have done for most of my life but I was actually born in the highlands of Scotland where I lived with four older siblings, my parents and my grandmother on a farm.

I regularly visit the area and up until my Dad died around ten years ago, would stay on the farm with him several times a year. This is where I feel I belong, it's where I am from, its my home, my heritage.

I have found in my work as a therapist that a feeling of belonging and understanding of who you are is extremely important.

In this blog, I share some tips and treatments to help you live a better life.

Moving away from my life on the farm as a child was quite significant for me. Often childhood events can have a ripple effect upon our lives for many years to come. Hypnotherapy is very good at helping us to sort through this and understand our lives and emotions.

Throughout my school years, I was bullied and my self-confidence was very low. I talked about the ripple effect. This lack of confidence stuck with me and lead me to believe that I was unworthy of anything good or happy for a very long time.

When I was twenty six years old I was living without a partner but I had two children. I was struggling financially so I had the idea that getting a professional qualification was the way to go if I wanted to be able to provide a secure future for my children. I went to Northumbria University and studied social work and in 2007 started work as a Child Protection Social Worker for Newcastle city council.

I’ve skipped a couple of events here which I’m going to share now, not to shock or sensationalize the story but because they explain very well why I chose Hypnotherapy eventually as a profession.

My Mum sadly died from breast cancer when I was 15 years old. I survived two very abusive relationships, and my Dad, who by then lived alone on his farm, developed depression and took his own life…two days before I started my new job as a Social Worker, can you believe it ?! Being a Child Protection Social worker is very draining, upsetting and stressful, and I didn’t understand it at the time but I was suffering from depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, so as I am sure you can imagine this was not a very positive time in my life! I used to cry on the way to work, It was too much.

I am never one to give up. Tough times often bring out a fire in your belly that keeps you going so I looked for a solution. First stop, change my job !! This was scary because I had a good wage and financial security, exactly what I had wanted to achieve, I'd done it hadn’t I? Our aims and goals change in life and though. It took me a long time to discover that, but if you think about something that you were stressing about a year ago now, I wonder how much has changed about it now. Nice little thinking subject that one I find, but back to the tail. I needed a new career, what could I do? I loved the element of supporting people as a social worker, despite the stress that the role carried, so could I do something similar I wondered, so I looked at counseling. I found a three-year course that would give me all the qualifications I would need to set up my own business as a counselor. The first year of this course also qualified you as a hypnotherapist but there was an option. If you had the relevant qualifications you could skip that year if you wanted to. I’ve got a degree in social work, does that count? I asked because I was anxious to make changes to my job as quickly as possible. The computer says no, was the response to that.

Well wasn’t that a stroke of luck? What I learned and what I discovered in my first year studying Hypnotherapy literally changed my life. Hypnotherapy I discovered was the therapy that was going to lift me from depression and the symptoms of PTSD. Hypnotherapy was going to mean that I had the skills to help others to do the same. This was going to start my journey as the owner of Hummingbird Hypnotherapy!

This confirmed my belief that you just never know what is around the corner but even when everything seems like it's going wrong that thing around the corner might just change your life in the most incredible way.

Today as you know I work with people delivering Hypnotherapy sessions all over the world from sunny North East England to as far away as New Zealand. Wish I'd bought shares in Zoom, don’t you?

I love it, simple as that, and I am so pleased and grateful to have you here.
